Canandaigua, N.Y. – Police are investigating after a body was found in a Canandaigua Lake outlet Sunday morning.

Canandaigua Police Chief John Welch says a fisherman spotted the body in shallow water near Lakeshore Dr. and Booth St. around 8 a.m. The victim has not been identified.

Police say by witness account, two white males and one white female were seen in the parking lot outside the old Wegmans Plaza Saturday.

The witness says the two men were in some sort of physical altercation.

Sunday, the body of a 66 year old man was found in a lake outlet about 40 yards from that parking lot.

Police don't know if that altercation led to the body found, but it's something they’re looking into.

“That obviously causes some concern and throughout the day we've developed some more information that leads us to believe there may be a connection in the discovery of the body,” Sgt. Scott Kadien with the Canandaigua Police said.

“We can say there are some wounds on the body but those wounds could be consistent with wounds from an altercation or maybe even a fall,” Kadien said.

The crime scene was a shock for fisherman like Eric Guthrie who comes to the area all the time.

“A lot of people come here a lot there's never any problems,” Guthrie said. “We pulled in here today [Sunday] and saw police tape and said, 'um that's kind of right where I'm trying to go fishing, something's going on.’”

Police are not calling this a homicide yet, they're investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Canandaigua Police Department at 394-3311.
