Rochester, N.Y. — Rochester City School Superintendent Bolgen Vargas met with board members Thursday about a draft plan that would restructure city schools.
“We are going to have better buildings with better services for our students,” Vargas said.
There are numerous reasons Vargas said he would like to revamp city schools, namely the decline in enrollment the district has seen in the past decade, and interest in moving students to modern facilities, better suited for their needs.
Some of these plans include the closing or moving programs from Schools 1, 10, 30 and 36, according to Vargas. School buildings that may close would be 16, 22, 25, 36 and 37. In some cases, completely new schools would be built, replacing old ones. In other cases, Vargas says students would be moved to existing buildings.
While the School Board received the first draft tonight, parents and other community members will be brought into the discussion next week.
“We are going to engage them and have a discussion and say, look, here are the choices,” said Vargas.
The first public meeting is scheduled for Monday evening at School Number Three.
