Rochester, N.Y. – More police officers are hitting the streets of Rochester to crack down on a wave of recent violence.

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard says extra patrols will be around the City ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. “We will be out there being proactive, making stops. Vehicle stops, bicycle stops, stopping kids on the corner, trying to get some of these guns off the street.”

Chief Sheppard says a lot of the recent crime can be linked to gang activity, but says the warm weather is also a factor.

Police are investigating seven homicides that have happened in the City in the past three weeks. While investigators are working to solve the crimes, Chief Sheppard says their work is often slowed because people are reluctant to come forward with information.
