Penn Yan roads keep students out of school

Updated: Friday, June 6 2014, 05:38 PM EDT

Penn Yan, N.Y. -- Penn Yan students were home for the day Thursday, but the reason for keeping them home had nothing to do with damage to the buildings.

The superintendent of Penn Yan schools, David Hamilton, said that some of the rural roads were badly damaged and may not be safe for school buses.

The buses will stay parked in the district lot until the roads are deemed safe enough to travel on.

Debris has been removed from some roads, while others are in need of repair.

Hamilton said that he would prefer students were in school, but safety is his top priority.

Thursday afternoon, school leaders will meet to determine if roads are safe enough and when buses will be able to travel on them again.
