Seneca Falls, N.Y. - There were no sex offenders arrested last Halloween in Seneca Falls, but police said the holiday itself provides a good chance to explain some of the rules pertaining to them.
There are 104 registered sex offenders in Seneca County, according to state records. Nearly a quarter of the county’s total reside in the town of Seneca Falls, according to the police department.
“It’s important for everybody to know where the sex offenders are in their community,” said Stuart Peenstra, Seneca Falls Chief of Police.
There were 828 visits by parole officers to the homes of sex offenders during Halloween nights of 2010 and 2011, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
Of the 828, 23 were taken into custody for parole violations which are not necessarily and are generally not sex offenses, according to DOCCS.
Kathy Cole of Seneca Falls chose to attend the meeting to learn about the sex offender classifications which range from level three offenders who carry a high risk of repeating an offense to level one, the lowest risk.
“I’m also a survivor myself,” said Cole. “I wanted to make sure that you know, if there’s a way to access information, I could access, so I could share with friends with small kids.”
Halloween gets a lot of publicity for myths surrounding sex offenders and their behavior, but it is rarely a day when offenders will commit sex offenses against others.
