ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Thruway Authority says state police issued 1,400 tickets during a recent crackdown on motorists who speed through work zones on the highway system.

Officials say troopers who patrol the Thruway issued the tickets for speeding violations during "Operation Work Brake," a five-day enforcement campaign held July 9 through July 13.

The authority says the enforcement effort was in response to numerous work zone crashes that occurred along the 570-mile Thruway system in 2011.

Last week, six people were killed when a tractor-trailer set off a fiery chain-reaction crash at a work zone on Route 11 in northern New York.

A combined funeral for four of the victims, all from the same St. Lawrence County family, was held Tuesday. The cause of that crash remains under investigation.
