(Geneva, N.Y.) -- Several security guards and police covered the area around William Street in Geneva as the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crews begin work.
A bulldozer adorned with a boxing glove arrived early Tuesday morning.
Construction crews and local volunteers also worked Tuesday to clean out the Hill family's house.
“We’re working with the design team for things are kept on site. There’s also things that are being kept at our storage facility. Then the family will have a couple of months to determine whether they want it brought back out, or whether they want it donated to a charity or whatnot,” said Art Delaney.
Delaney Moving and Storage has a crew of about ten workers and three moving trucks at the site. They have spent the day packing and moving the Hills’ possessions.
“A job like this would typically take two-and-a-half to three days. We’re going to try to shoot for about seven hours,” Delaney said. “It’s a great story. There’s no doubt about it. These folks do some remarkable things.”
Designer John Littlefield said, "We build the house in a week, but the designers, we have a day and a half to build the bedrooms. We can't do anything until we have…bedrooms!"
The family did choose a few things they wanted to be kept inside the home. Everything else is packed into huge moving trucks.
Dozens of volunteer construction workers were on site Tuesday. "This is something I've been dreaming to do," said one.
The crowds enjoyed the spectacle also. The designers say crowds were bigger at the Hill’s on Day Two than in many other cities they've been to -- and that's exactly what they want.
“If you can't swing a hammer, paint some wall, lay cement…you can still volunteer. Come on down and cheer us on. On day 5 -- that goes a long way," said Littlefield.
The home itself will be demolished on Wednesday. Then crews will be working day and night to complete the new home.
Meanwhile, the Hill family has been sent to Cancun on vacation. They return Sunday to see their new home.
This week, 13WHAM viewers can see daily changes up as the house goes up on 13WHAM News This Morning from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. on 13 and from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on the CW and on 13 WHAM News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m.
The completed show will air on ABC 13WHAM-TV in November.
