Rochester, N.Y. – A sellout crowd of more than 13,000 saw Pittsford native Abby Wambach lead the United States women’s soccer team to an 8-0 win against Costa Rica Saturday at Sahlen’s Stadium.

Wambach scored twice as the U.S. built a 5-0 halftime lead, with Megan Rapinoe also scoring twice and Alex Morgan adding one. Sydney Leroux, Carli Lloyd and Heather O’Reilly each scored in the second half.

Saturday’s match was the team’s first since winning Olympic gold Aug. 9 in London, and the first of its Fan Tribute Tour.

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage announced before the game she is stepping down and will return to her native Sweden, but she will stay with the team for at least two more games. Team USA is now 89-6-10 since Sundhage took the job in 2007.
