Greece, NY-- In return for his confession for the 1991 murder of Greece music teacher Stephanie Kupchynsky, accused killer Edward Laraby asked to be buried outside state prison walls when he dies of Lou Gehrig's disease.
Police agreed to the deal but say they cannot by law, agree to Laraby's latest demand. He says he can solve 14 other cold cases if police agree to have him moved from a hospital unit at the Wende Correctional Facility to a private hospital in Rochester, such as Strong.
Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter says only the State Department of Corrections can decide whether to transfer an inmate to a hospital.
But Baxter does believe that some of Laraby's claims are credible. He says Laraby has also hinted that some of these cold cases happened out of the area, possibly out of the state.
"I would not be surprised if Stephanie was not his only victim." Chief Baxter told us. "There is the potential that there could be other victims out there."
Laraby told WHAM-TV about the cold cases in a letter sent from prison.
Greece Police say they are contacting other agencies to look at missing persons cases. They are also hoping to interview Laraby again.
Laraby's attorney, Robert Napier, wouldn't say how much he knows about the cold cases, but believes his client has information that police can use to solve these crimes and give families of victims some peace.
Napier says Laraby doesn't feel that the hospital in prison can treat his illness in its final stages.
Napier says he doesn't know how much time Laraby has left.
