Macedon, N.Y. – An Amtrak train struck an unoccupied car 14-miles east of Rochester Thursday night in Macedon.
The accident involved westbound Amtrak train 283 shortly after 7:45 p.m., en route from New York City to Niagara Falls.
Macedon Police Chief John Colella told 13WHAM news that a car got stuck on the tracks near Quaker Rd. when the driver became disoriented and went off of the roadway.
The driver and occupants of the vehicle were able to safely escape the vehicle before the train arrived.
The Amtrak train then hit the car, splitting it in two and pushing it shortly past Canandaigua Road.
The train has since been idle at the scene.
An Amtrak spokesperson told 13WHAM News there are 87 passengers aboard the train. There are no reported injuries to any passengers or crew.
At this time, Amtrak is looking into alternate transportation for the passengers. Should that not be an option, they will wait for the scene to clear.
