Mendon, NY & Florida --- Billionaire Tom Golisano is now a legal resident of Florida.  Speaking by phone with me from Florida, the Paychex founder confirmed his residency has been officially changed; something he vowed he would do last year after expressing disgust with Albany politics and high taxes in New York.

However, Golisano still owns a home in Mendon, and it happens to be in the 29th Congressional District.  On Monday, March 8th at 5 p.m., Rep. Eric Massa intends to resign that House Seat amid concerns for his own health and a House Ethics Committee investigation.

As I understand it, Golisano, who’s never shied away from a political fight and was thrice a Gubernatorial Candidate, would be unable to run for NY-29 seat if Governor Paterson scheduled a special election in the near future because he would not be a legal resident of N.Y. at the time he was sworn into office.  But a run in November to be sworn in January 2011 would surely be enough time to change his legal residence.

Golisano also maintains a political action committee – Responsible New York – that could potentially involve itself in a special election.  Thanks to a monumental Supreme Court Ruling on campaign finance, Golisano’s PAC could spend any amount of money it wished on advertising in the district.  But when asked about whether he or Responsible New York would involve itself in this race Golisano said “no comment” and later added it’s much too soon to say anything on this topic.

In the interest of full disclosure, I had not heard anyone whisper Golisano’s name in any way, shape, or form over the last three days.  But knowing about his Mendon home and his ever-present interest in politics I thought I had to ask.

If I was him I would have never run for office and would have moved out of state 20 years ago.

Why would a billionaire run for an office that pays @ $ 70,000 a year? Does he need a job that has health benefits? Did the hospital he bought go out of business? Is he going to be interested in saving the real residents of New York tax money? Is this still about legalizing pot? Does he still want to legalize prostitution? Are there no direct flights from Florida to Vegas? Could Massa just sell his seat to Golisano and put the proceeds toward the state deficit? Would all of the campaign money from New York State be enough to close the budget gap? Capitalism ROCKS, so long as you can afford it!

Someone who is a millionare or billionare doesn't get the sympathy vote for not wanting to pay taxes that everyone else has to pay. If a politician did that, we would be screaming for him to leave office, not run for one.

I think that Golisano should run for Governor again, this would be his year.

NY sure forced him out with the criminal tax structure. Sure he does not want to pay the taxes that you or I pay. I don't want to pay the taxes that I pay. NY has been oppressing us for a while with the taxes. I applaud anybody that screws NY over by taking their money elsewhere.

NY did not force him out. He does not want to pay the taxes on his property like you & I do. Let him stay in Florida. Just because he has money, he thinks everyone should be for him. Give money to put your name in lights like Strong, etc.

The guy was a lame duck in the elections he ran in why would anyone want him now. He would be suicide for whatever party he is a member of.

What's wrong with not wanting to be stolen from by NY state? Golisano didn't abandon NY, NY forced him out.

He didn't want to be overtaxed. What's wrong with that. I'm sure everyone else doesn't want to either, even though they try to play it off.
