Rochester, N.Y. - Researchers at the University of Rochester and Texas A&M University have made a surprising discovery about the oil left over from the 2010 Deep Horizon oil spill.
Scientists found that within five months of the disaster, naturally-occurring bacteria consumed more than 200,000 tons of oil and natural gas left in the Gulf of Mexico.
The information will be used to predict the behavior of future oil spills.
The study was published this week in Environmental Science and Technology.
