Rochester, N.Y. – University of Rochester entertains a flock of students, staff, parents and alumni.
It’s Meliora Weekend. Barbara Walters was the keynote speaker; she spoke with a crowd this morning.
“The purpose of life is to be happy and you find happiness through compassion and warm heartedness,” said Walters as she recalled a speech given by the Dali Lama. “For about 3 days after this speech I practiced what the Dali Lama preached. I moved away from all negative thoughts, I stopped competing for any interviews, I smiled a great deal, I was never jealous, I was never competitive, I was also very warm hearted… I was also very boring.”
Walters’ speech was anything but. It was filled with notable moments from some of her most memorable interviews. Built around her appearance was a long list of events.
“This is pretty unique in my experience,” said Michael Prezieoso, who was visiting his daughter – a freshman at U of R. “There’s an a cappella group here later tonight that my daughter's got involved with, so that's what we're going to do.”
That a cappella group is the nationally known YellowJackets, who took to the stage for an enthusiastic crowd.
“This is always a great weekend,” said YellowJacket member Matthew Carlin. “Just have all the alumni and everyone together and just reconnect with past alumni and have a great concert.”
Meliora Weekend continues through Sunday.
