Batavia, N.Y. – A garage fire spread to an apartment in Batavia, causing heavy damage.

The fire started on Pearl Street just after 2 p.m. Monday. A person driving by the building noticed the flames and called 911.

Most of the animals inside the house, including several cats, were able to get out safely. Officials say a puppy did not make it out.

Ten people were displaced and are getting help from the American Red Cross.
