Fairport, N.Y. – It was a difficult first week of school for Fairport High School as they began the school year without one of their beloved teachers.
Heather Boyum was killed at the end of July when she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle. Butterflies flew in honor of Heather, released by her two young children and husband. The ceremony was a way for colleagues to celebrate the teacher that had grown to be their friend, during the ten years she worked at the school.
Colleagues and friends spoke of Heather's strength and ability to connect with people, and also her ability to make a difference in her students' lives.
Fairport High School Assistant Principal Wayne Ackles says having this ceremony was important for the staff that has been grieving over the loss of their co-worker.
“She is the epitome of what we want teachers to be and what we want to be as human beings,” said Ackles, “because how she connected with people, and was so dedicated to living life to the fullest. That's something that drew people to Heather.”
The school plans to celebrate Heather's life throughout the school year.
