Brasilia, Brazil (AP) - Police in the city of Santa Maria in southern Brazil have lowered the death toll from a nightclub fire to 232. More than 100 others were injured in the fire.

Witnesses say it may have been a flare or a firework that started the blaze. Survivors, police and firefighters are providing the same account of a band member setting the ceiling's soundproofing ablaze.
A local newspaper reports the club has a capacity of between 1,000-2,000 people. The cause of the fire isn't known.
