Dansville, N.Y. - Dansville School Superintendent Dr. Paul Alioto confirmed that the driver in a school bus accident where a girl was dragged, has resigned from his job.

John Coley, 62, stepped down on Friday.

The accident happened last Wednesday afternoon in the town of Ossian, in Livingston County. Troopers say Coley told them he was not paying attention when the girl got off the bus, and closed the door too soon. It trapped her backpack.

Haley Heath was dragged about 900 feet before the bus stopped. She suffered minor injuries.

State Police said Coley would not be charged because it was an accident.

Following the crash, the Dansville Central School District placed Coley on administrative leave. He had a clean driving record from his eight years as a bus driver.

The Dansville Central School District began a transportation safety audit Monday. The safety audit will continue throughout the week.

The purpose of the audit is to examine all transportation safety procedures, driver handbooks, training protocols and policies.

Findings of the safety audit will be presented to the public in February.
