Canandaigua, N.Y. – A neighborhood gave a family displaced by Hurricane Sandy a reason to smile Saturday night.

A woman and her two children from New Jersey are staying with relatives in Canandaigua after their home flooded. The children had to miss Halloween, so some of their new neighbors gave them a belated chance to trick-or-treat.

The family lost their two cars in the flood, but their house will be rebuilt.

“It’s hard, but thankfully their dad is able to do some of the work to help rebuild the house,” said Aimee Malec, a neighbor who helped organize the Halloween event. “It’s not an ideal situation, but they’re doing OK.”
