Canandaigua, N.Y.—Even in the dead of winter, Canandaigua Lake provides a lovely scenic view.

“I wouldn’t mind stuff on the other side of the road,” sand Thelma Dumbleton, a city resident. “But on the waterfront, I would prefer to have it.”

Dumbleton is among the city residents sad to see Steamboat Landing Restaurant, which has stood for more than a decade, close.

“I enjoyed it generally. I usually went there with friends for lunch, which was fun,” said Dumbleton.

Sunday, the restaurant doors were permanently shut as the company that owns the land prepares for construction of a hotel and conference center. The restaurant closure moves the long awaited hotel project one step closer to construction.

“I know change is not always easy for people, but if they do it right, if they do it nice, i think it will be a real asset,” said Nick Violas, owner of Nolan’s Steakhouse.

Violas said he is a tenant of one of the project’s biggest financial supporters, David Genecco.

His steakhouse sits on Lakeshore Drive, less than a half mile from Steamboat Landing.

The project, which has been approved by Canandaigua City Council, will need another look by the council, according to city attorney Michele Smith. Small changes made by the developer will need approval. A public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, but a vote is not expected until March, according to Smith.

Calls to David Genecco were not returned, nor were messages left for city mayor Ellen Polimeni.
