Canisteo, N.Y. – State Police are investigating an attempted kidnapping in Canisteo, Steuben County.

Around 3:30 Sunday morning, a man wearing a baseball cap entered a home on East Main Street in Canisteo in Steuben County

According to State Police the man took a 10-year-old girl out of her bed, brought her downstairs and left her there, in the home for an unknown reason, before leaving the house.

State Police say the man entered the home through an unlocked door.

“The best thing we can tell the public here is make sure you're locking your doors take your keys out of your car,” said Captain Rick Allen with the New York State Police.  “We don't feel, at this point, that there's some great harm to the community.”

Neighbors who live on the quiet main street say they’re shocked to hear something like this happened in their small town.

“It's very scary this kind of thing doesn't happen here,” said Maria Strinni Gill, who lives on East Main Street.   “I've lived here for 2 years.  I moved here from a small city, tiny city to get away from police involvement.”

State police are continuing their investigation.  They are asking anyone with information to call 607-776-6866.
