Rochester/Palmyra, N.Y. - Three people from our area won national honors for their heroism.

The Carnegie Medals of Freedom are awarded to 19 people nationwide.

Michael Scribner of Palmyra will be awarded a medal for saving a friend from drowning while kayaking in April of last year.

Scribner dove into Ganargua Creek to pull his friend from cold water after his kayak rolled.

Also honored were Chris Patino and Mustafa Said. The two rushed to stop Kevin Minemier from stabbing a young girl inside a Wegmans store in January of last year. Both were injured. Minemier is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
