Washington - More than a third of all U.S. counties are shrinking in population.

New census data puts the blame on factors like an aging population as well as weakened local economies.

A new study found that without new immigrants, many metropolitan areas like New York, Chicago or St. Louis would have posted flat or negative population growth.

More than 1,100 counties are seeing more deaths than births.
