Rochester, N.Y. – Up to 30 percent of Rochester’s network of surveillance cameras is not working at any given time. Even though two police officers are assigned nearly full time to troubleshoot problems and make repairs, the city cannot keep up with maintenance.
City Council will vote this month on a $220,000 annual contract with an Illinois firm to maintain the cameras. The contract includes a daily audit of the equipment.
The city has 173 cameras and plans to install 30 more this year. The city began installing the camera system in 2008 to prevent and solve crimes. Police department workers monitor the cameras around the clock.
