(AP) - Public colleges and universities are pledging they'll produce an additional 4 million graduates by 2025, providing a major boost toward a national target of having 60 percent of adults hold a college degree.
Two leading education groups say 490 institutions enrolling about three-quarters of four-year college students are committing to boosting the number of degrees they award over the next nine years.
A key part of the strategy will involve reaching out to students who've dropped out and failed to earn a degree at any institution.
The United States has fallen from first to 14th in the developed world in the proportion of its population with a college education.
