Newtown, Conn. – Mary Sherlach, the psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School who had ties to the Finger Lakes region, was among those killed in Friday’s shooting.

Sherlach was a SUNY Cortland graduate and spent her summers on Owasco Lake in Cayuga County. She and the school’s principals were among the first victims. They reportedly ran toward the shooter, trying to protect the students.

Sherlach had worked with troubled children at the school since 1994, which would have included the time gunman Adam Lanza was a student there.
