Rochester, N.Y. – Sherry Argro walks slowly with a cane. She can’t go far.
“When I’m trying to walk, I have to hold onto something because the pain is just unbearable,” she said.
One year ago this week, Argro was hit on Thurston Rd. by a car driven by Kashia Houston, whose blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit. Houston was texting at the time of the crash and left the scene.
Argro’s pelvis and leg were broken, her diaphragm was cracked, her spleen was ruptured and her lung collapsed. She’s had seven surgeries, including a knee reconstruction.
The busy mother of two who worked two jobs now spends her days at home and in physical therapy. It will be another two years before Argro might be able to walk normally.
But it could be worse. Argro almost didn’t survive. This week, she celebrated her 40th birthday.
“I’m here. And I thank god for that every day,” Argro said.
Houston pleaded guilty to numerous charges. She will be sentenced next month to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison.
“I just hope she gets the help that she needs and the counseling that she needs,” Argro said. “Hopefully she can get her life back together, as well as me trying to get mine back together.”
