Rochester, N.Y. - At least five people, including a Rochester firefighter, were hurt in a fire at a home on Locust Street Thursday morning.
Crews were called to a home on Locust Street just before 10:30 Thursday morning.
The fire chief said two adults and two children inside the home were taken to Strong Hospital for treatment. There's no word on their injuries.
A firefighter was treated for burns to his neck and hands and was later released from the hospital.
Neighbors tell 13WHAM they say the flames and heard people screaming at the home.
“We kicked the doors open, we tried to get into the house, there was too much smoke,” said next door neighbor Jimmy Soto.
Soto wasn't giving up, even up against thick smoke and flames pouring out of the home at 105 Locust Street.
“The little girl jumped out the window onto the garage, so we went back there and got the little girl off the roof,” said Soto. “Then we came around the front and we told the lady to jump and a bunch of us just helped catch the old lady.”
“I'm thinking I don't want to drop her but it would be better than burning, it ended up being a clean save, she didn't hit the ground,” said neighbor Brandon Baxter.
A heroic act - something Soto and Baxter say they didn't think twice about.
“I wasn't thinking, just human instinct, we all just did what we could to help save them,” Soto said.
Soto wasn't even worried about his own house, which is right next door; where flames could have spread.
Soto said, “I'm just glad we were there to help them.”
He now hopes this family gets the help they deserve to get back on their feet.
“I just hope someone out there can help these people get established once they get out of the hospital, they lost everything they had,” said Soto.
The local Red Cross chapter tells 13 WHAM the occupants of that home have been released from the hospital and that they have a place to stay.
The Red Cross expects to meet with the survivors Thursday night and provide them food and clothing.
Firefighters are investigating what sparked the fire, but are investigating all possibilities including arson.
13WHAM's Alexis Arnold and Sean Carroll will have more on this developing story tonight on 13WHAM News beginning at 5.
