Albany, N.Y. - Governor Andrew Cuomo wants gas stations to be prepared for damage from storms.

Drivers lined up for hours hoping to fuel up in the days following Hurricane Sandy. The storm knocked out power to gas stations.

Under a proposal from Cuomo on Wednesday, gas stations within a half-mile of a highway exit would be required to be ready to install generators.

"One of the issues we learned the hard way, was its not as easy as having a generator brought to the gas station," Cuomo said. "The gas station has to be wired to accept that generator. You can't do that in the aftermath of a storm."

The state would cover the wiring cost up to $10,000. Gas stations, then, would be responsible for bringing in generators within 24 hours of a power loss.
