Victor, N.Y. - Since a young age most of us have been told not to flush certain items down the toilet or you'll clog the system.
This time, it's not your own toilet, but the waste water treatment plant in Victor that is dealing with the result of the clogging.
"The biggest problem we're having is diapers," said David Degear, Superintendent of Farmington Water & Sewer Dept.
It could mean $250,000 in upgrades for the water treatment facility in Farmington, said Degear.
The Farmington system uses 33 pumping stations, 29 of them are in Victor, four are in Farmington, according to Degear.
Judging by the pumping stations throughout the service area, new housing developments and shopping centers are blamed for contributing most of the unwanted refuse that is clogging the system, said Degear.
"I've never flushed a diaper," said Kristi Bullwinkle, a Victor mother of three who lives at new housing development. "Flushable wipes, sure."
Unfortunately, wipes are also part of the problem affecting pumping stations and the main treatment facility, according to Degear.
"Once it gets to the plant, we have a bigger problem because it gets into the bar screen and it gets into the settling tanks," said Degear.
Letters have been sent to Farmington residents to warn them about the issue, and the Town of Victor will notify people through an upcoming newsletter.
