Rochester, N.Y. – A wrecking ball tore down five decades of shopping memories at the East Avenue Wegmans Saturday, but new ones are right around the corner, literally.

The city’s only Wegmans store is being torn down as its replacement is under construction. It will have double the space and is scheduled to open in May.

Many loyal customers turned out to see the demolition, which should be done by the end of March.

“Well, the boys like to watch it,” said Gary Williams of Fairport, who brought his grandsons. “I guess it’s fun watching anything being demolished – the old going down and the new going up.”
