Rochester, N.Y. - Two local groups are asking people to spread the word, to stop the use of the word "retard."

The Golisano Foundation and University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry students held a pledge sign-up drive Wednesday.

Members of the Arc of Monroe's Gregory Street Blues Band and other local groups performed at the event.

The term "mental retardation" was originally used as a medical term, but the deragatory forms "retard" and "retarded" have been used to degrade and insult people with intellectual disabilities.
