Greece, N.Y. – The relationship between parents and teachers is vital to student's learning - because of this, the Greece Central School District is going beyond parent teacher conferences and is working to make their schools 'family friendly'.

It's part of the district's five year strategic plan to improve the relationship between parents and teachers.

“I think it's huge, I think it's essential,” said School Counselor Fran Trouskie. “We understand them, they understand us and it's not just at parent teacher time and it's not just at open house time.”

Administrators, teachers, staff and parents are learning how to engage more parents to have active roles in their child's education.

Parent's like Colleen Taylor, who sees her positive attitude toward school reflected in her children.

“To be able to communicate and interact together is marvelous,” said Taylor.

“We have 30 years of research that says when parents get more engaged with their children… the kids do better in school,” said Dr. Joni Samples of Family Friendly School.”

After this week's workshop the groups will be coached for several months - as they implement the family friendly schools program into the district.
