Brighton, N.Y.—Soccer fans practicing at a youth league in Brighton had some added motivation going into practice Friday. News that soccer start Abby Wambach would be joining the Western New York Flash created a buzz at the Brighton Sports Zone.

“I think it’s great that she’s coming here so we can see her and see what she does, so we can take after her,” said Grace Allen, a 10-year-old soccer player from Pittsford.

Grace’s father bought season tickets before the season schedule was even set.

“They are super psyched,” said Rob Marotta, a youth coach.

The idea of Wambach playing for the Flash seemed as though it would never happen after the cash-strapped soccer league the team had been playing in folded after last season.

This year, the team was resurrected in a new league.

Marotta said he brought his children to meet professional soccer players in the past.

“You talk with some of the players one-on-one and they are all about wanting (to) have the opportunities for the younger girls to have a league,” said Marotta.

Games are expected to begin in April.
