Pittsford, N.Y. - Ned Powers with Powers Farm in Pittsford knows all too well how unpredictable Mother Nature can be.

“This has been a pretty good winter. This has probably been the most normal winter we've had in three or four years,” Powers said.

Powers said last March started out pretty dry, followed by a cold snap that put them behind.

The farm had to replant a few fields.

This year, the Powers Farm is blanketed by snow which Powers said can help for the spring planting season.

So far this year, the Rochester area has surpassed the snowfall total for the entire winter season last year.

“Down here, we've got water laying in this lower part of the field and that never happens, that's because we've got frost still in the fields but once that frost is gone, it just drops right into the ground,” Powers said.

But the Powers’ Farm is also sandy.

That means the ground absorbs moisture quickly, so the chances of that moisture sticking around for the summer are not likely.

“It depends, we can use a lot of snow now and that would be fine for early on,” Powers said.

Powers also said ideally he'd like temperatures to be a little colder.

He said a harsh winter decreases chances of disease and insects affecting crops.
