Rochester, N.Y. – A proposal that would have banned firearms from Monroe County buildings has been rejected by a
county legislature committee.

The Democratic-backed measure failed in a 3-2 vote along party lines.

If approved, the law would have made it illegal for anyone other than law enforcement officers to carry firearms into any
county-owned or -leased building.

“This is a reasonable measure,” said Rep. Carrie Andrews (D). “I'm disappointed it didn't pass.”

“I don't think this is an issue we've had at county owned buildings. Therefore, it's something that I don't think we need to infringe yet again on permitted gun owners' rights,” Daniele Anthony (R) said.

Next month, Republicans in the legislature plan to present a measure voicing the county's opposition to the state's Safe
Act.

Orleans and Ontario County lawmakers have already passed similar issues.
