(13WHAM-TV) - President Obama will meet with members of Congress today about avoiding going over the fiscal cliff.
If a deal isn't reached, the U.S. Treasury Department will have trouble paying its bills.
Among the first things to be affected: federal unemployment benefits, which would stop for more than 2 million people within 10 days.
Both sides are lashing out at each other, using language that holds no apparent hope for compromise.
"John Boehner seems to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D).
"Republicans aren't about to write a blank check or anything Senate Democrats put forward, just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff--that wouldn't be fair to the American people," said Mitch McConnell, (R) Senate Minority Leader.
House Speaker John Boehner has called the House into session on Sunday to avoid bringing those massive tax increases and deep spending cuts.
