(13WHAM-TV) - Washington - With less than 24 hours to go until spending cuts and tax increases kick in, there's no deal in Congress.

The biggest points of contention are across-the-board cuts to government programs and defense--and tax rates on people making more than $250,000 a year.

Congressional leaders tried to project some optimism late Sunday night. Majority Leader Harry Reid said, "We'll have further announcements perhaps at 11 o'clock in the morning. I certainly hope so."

"I also placed a call to the vice president to see if he could help jumpstart the negotiations on his side,” said Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. “I want everyone to know I'm willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner."

If there's no deal today, the average American family will start the New Year with a $3,400 tax hike.
