Rochester, N.Y. – Many volunteers honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy Saturday on the National Day of Service with an event called King for a Day.
About 250 local college students and 50 local residents teamed up with Foodlink to put together meals for kids from low-income families.
The Day of Service comes two days before the Martin Luther King holiday, also the day of President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.
Tim Scott, Foodlink’s volunteer relations coordinator, said Saturday’s event was a perfect way to mark the holiday.
“The thing that's great about volunteerism is that anybody can do it,” Scott said. “Just like Dr. King made a difference, the idea that King For A Day is that we can change our communities just by volunteering for a day and sort of embodying what he was looking to do, by changing the world and changing our communities and making the world a better place.”
