Rochester, N.Y. – Police released the name of the man who drowned in the Erie Canal Monday afternoon.

Police say the victim is Ronald Elwood Dean, 56.

Police say Dean and another person were fishing off a concrete ledge near the Genesee Valley Park when he fell into the water.

Officers learned from the witness that he heard a splash and turned to see the victim in the canal.

The witness then left and went for help.

We're told rescue crews tried to revive him, but were unable to do so.

Police say the victim fell about 4-5 feet in a rocky area and was not able to swim.
