Geneseo, N.Y. - Leaders at SUNY Geneseo canceled the remainder of the women's volleyball season Friday after an alleged hazing incident off campus last weekend.
“When the institution says something, it means something. So, when the institution says hazing will not be tolerated, it is compelled to take action when hazing takes place,” said Robert Bonfiglio, Vice President for Student Campus Life.
Eleven SUNY Geneseo students were charged with hazing after a women’s volleyball gathering September 2nd. Police say team veterans forced freshman to drink in excess.
Police say Sunday morning they received a report of an 18-year-old female SUNY Geneseo student taken to NOYES Memorial Hospital for alcohol poisoning. The student was allegedly drinking at the gathering on Court Street.
“We get pamphlets about hazing, what we should and shouldn’t do just to make sure stuff like this doesn’t happen,” said James Gavigan, a freshman lacrosse player.
“What they did was wrong. The punishment is a little harsh,” said Erin Minavio,” a freshman softball player.
Police say the victims were freshmen on the SUNY Geneseo Women’s Volleyball team.
Further punishment for students involved is possible according to school administrators.
