Rochester, N.Y. – Geva Theatre is in the midst of a multi-million-dollar renovation project. The project got a boost last week from a $250,000 state economic development grant.

Masonry and window work has already been completed on the outside of the 145-year-old theater. Inside, work starts this summer on a new HVAC system. The theatre will be closed much of June. Over the next two years, Geva will renovate the lobby, build an upstairs donor lounge, upgrade the café and bar to expand service and replace the theater seats.

Geva has raised $6 million of the $8 million needed. Supporters say theater is vital to the arts scene, with 160,000 visitors a year. Geva has been putting on productions for more than 30 years.

“Geva is one of the 25 most-attended theaters in the United States. It’s one of the institutions that makes Rochester a first-class city,” said Geva Executive Director Tom Parrish.
