Rochester NY - If passed, Governor Andrew Cuomo says his proposed ban on assault rifles would be the toughest of its kind in the country.
He is also proposing a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips. We asked people here what they thought about the ban.
Kordell Jackson is a gun owner and gun dealer. He owns Jackson Guns And Ammo in Henrietta.
He is also the son of a retired Monroe County Sheriffs Deputy. Jackson says while he supports some controls on assault weapons, he doesn't agree with an all-out ban.
He believes it's too extreme and he doesn't think it will prevent mass shootings because he says in most cases, the suspects are using illegal weapons.
Jackson said, "The guns are going to be still around, criminals are still going to obtain them one way or the other...I believe there should be some type of control, but it's for the wrong people."
Barbara Melnyk says she supports the use of guns for hunting or protection but admits, she is not a gun lover. Melnyk said she favors the ban on assault rifles because she doesn't think anyone should own a weapon that powerful.
Melnyk said "I mean it's got to stop...These assault weapons were not intended to be used in mass killings...there is no need to have assault weapons in the hands of people today."
If the legislation becomes law, New York would be the first state in the country to pass tougher gun control laws following the Newtown school shooting.
