The Great American Road Trip is coming back this summer—or so the American Automobile Association says.

Many Americans like to take long weekends around Independence Day, but with July Fourth falling on a Wednesday, that could mean burning two vacation days.

However, the AAA has found that many families are doing just that -- because they can better afford to travel.

After surveying families around the country, AAA found that the kind of road trip we used to see with the Griswold family in "National Lampoon’s Vacation” -- is coming back.

"Gas prices are going down at the same time that airfare is going up,” said Genevieve Brown, ABC News writer and editor. “This may be the summer that people actually get back to taking road trips."

Say you want to take the family on a cross-country vacation this summer. In the average vehicle, you'd save nearly $200 on gasoline -- compared to the cost of traveling a year ago, or even three months ago.
