Albany, N.Y. - New York's State Senate passed what supporters call one of the toughest gun laws in the county Monday night.
The bill would further restrict the state's ban on assault weapons and limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, rather than the current ten-bullet magazines.
"Government's job is to respond to people's needs at the time, and the people of this state now are crying out for help on the issue of gun violence and I think this does that," said Governor Andrew Cuomo before Monday night's vote. "We don't need another tragedy to point out the problems in the system."
The bill also includes the Webster Provision. Added following the deadly shooting of two West Webster firefighters, it would require a mandatory life sentence for anyone convicted in the shooting death of a first responder.
The vote passed 43-18 in the Senate thanks to a strong Democratic vote. Local State Senators George Maziarz, Mike Nozzolio and Joe Robach voted against the bill.
The Democrat-led Assembly is expected to easily pass the measure.
