Farmington, N.Y. — For two years the Avilas' planned to open a brick-and-mortar store to accompany their website, AR15.com.
“We put a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of money into this building,” said Jorge Avila, Business Manager for the Farmington company.
The store was slated to open in April and would have meant about ten new jobs, but may never open.
“At this point it’s put the store opening on hold,” said Avila. “We have put thought into the possibility of moving out of the state.
“The laws now make our core product illegal to sell in New York state,” explained Avila.
The business could entertain the thought of selling different kinds of gun products, but Avila said there is an ethical component of the situation.
“We cannot continue to support a state that is taking away the freedom of its citizens,” said Avila.
Within a month, Avila and his partners expect to make a decision on whether or not to open the store in Farmington.
A new by NBC New York, Wall Street Journal and Marist College poll found that 41 percent of New Yorkers feel the state’s new gun law is “about right,” 30 percent feel it went too far and 19 percent say it was does not go far enough.
