Hamlin, N.Y.—The Hamlin Zoning Board of Appeals delayed a decision on a variance needed to build a new $1 million dollar library on Monday night.
The funding largely provided through an endowment and grant money has already been raised. The plan calls for the library to be placed near Hamlin Town Hall, just 48 feet from the road. The town regulations call for buildings to be 70 feet from the road.
More than 100 people attended Monday night’s meeting, which was moved from the normal board room to the town hall gymnasium because of the larger than expected crowd size.
A special meeting has been scheduled for February 27th. If the library is unable to gain approval soon, its director said the grant money could be lost. The library’s current space is leased, and that lease expires at the end of the year, according to supporters of the new library.
