Washington - Former Senator Chuck Hagel begins confirmation hearings today to become the next Secretary of Defense.
Hagel will appear before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
If confirmed, he would succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
Critics have challenged Hagel's past comments on Israel, Iran and nuclear weapons.
