Webster, N.Y. - This has been a busy week for heating contractors. Keith Shaw of Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning, says he's worked some long days responding to calls for no heat and other furnace problems.
Shaw says while the extremely cold temperatures don't cause most furnace issues, it is the worst time to be without heat.
50-percent of the calls Isaac responded to this week were for people who either lost heat completely or had problems with their furnace.
For Al Frederiksen, there was a problem with a valve on his boiler. That created uneven heat in his house, leaving his bedroom and some other areas without heat on some of the coldest days of the year.
His wife Maxine was wrapped in a blanket, cuddling their dog, as a space heater cranked in front of her.
Shaw went to work quickly to fix the problem and also discovered something even more serious. Several small gas leaks.
He says because of recent fatalities involving gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning, all contractors at Isaac now test for both while on all service calls.
Al Fredericksen was grateful to have the furnace fixed and peace of mind, knowing his boiler was safe and the gas leaks were repaired.
Some good advice to keep in mind. If you notice a problem with your furnace or the way heat is circulating in your home, call before the furnace stops working.
Isaac also recommends regular service calls to keep everything in working order and to keep you from being in the cold inside your home on these frigid days.
