Henrietta, N.Y. – Friday, Kevin Thompson of Issac Heating and Air Conditioning showed a customer how to change the filter in her new furnace.

“Make sure your filter is checked up regularly and changed regularly if it needs be changed, change it,” said Kevin Thompson, of Issac Heating and Air Conditioning.

Its one step homeowners can take to make their home more energy efficient. Something that's important to homeowner Pat Wood, who just replaced the furnace in her rental home.

“The old furnace was from 1958,” said Wood, “they were always here repairing it.”

While there's plenty of things that can be done to keep heat in a home, such as weather stripping the windows and doors. There are also things to keep an eye on outside.

“You don't want icicles,” said Thompson, “how icicles are created is heat in your attic and it can't get out. The biggest thing with attics is ventilation.”

A simple way to keep heat out of the attic is to put weather stripping around the attic hatch.

“There are actually foam padded outlet covers and light switch covers that help with some of the air infiltration coming up,” explained Thompson. “Another simple task a homeowner can do and can perform."

Weather proofing your home can be expensive. That's why Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in town Friday with Congresswoman Louise Slaughter to ask the Obama administration to fund the Weatherization Assistance Program in New York that can save households up to $400 each year on heating and cooling bills.
