Honeoye, N.Y.— On Wednesday night, the Honeoye Board of Education unanimously accepted the resignation of the Junior Varsity and Varsity coaches.
This comes after school officials say there was a hazing incident between the Varsity and JV basketball players on a team bus on the way home from a game. Both JV and Varsity coaches were on the bus at the time.
When asked repeatedly about the hazing, Honeoye superintendent David Bills would not elaborate on the details of incident.
“School is simulated life and real life,” he said. “Some of our kids have made some mistakes. We have great kids here. We're working through it. There has been a violation, but we're working through it and going to be moving on.”
13WHAM News spoke to the father of one of the six varsity basketball players who has been suspended for five days. Another player's parents told 13WHAM the varsity team has had to forfeit the rest of the season. The father said that he and his family have accepted the district’s decision.
“It is what it is,” he said.
When asked if the varsity team’s season is canceled, the superintendent said: “We are still investigating and looking through all the evidence in order to determine what the outcome will be.”
The suspended player’s father says his son will be apologizing to the Junior Varsity players.
Reporters asked the man about the incident. He wouldn’t go into details about what his son and his teammates are accused of doing but he said he would describe it as rough-housing. However, he says the district explained to his family how it was considered a violation of school policy and code.
On Wednesday night, the Honeoye Boys Junior Varsity team continued their season with the district’s athletic director as their interim coach.
